Welcome from the Team Captains
This week, only our nationalities separate us as 24 professional golfers, two Teams of 12 each, compete in The 2006 Ryder Cup on The Palmer Course at The K Club. Our ambitions for victory, the respect we hold for one another and the respect we hold for golf and this competition are the same. Both of us are determined to lead our Teams to success. A Ryder Cup victory is a reward that is cherished for a lifetime.
Whatever the outcome, we want to be able to look back at this Ryder Cup with pride, and say we served golf well. We agree that nothing is more important than upholding the integrity of the game and The Ryder Cup.
We are also both delighted that The Ryder Cup is being played in Ireland. We have enjoyed playing here over the years and, like all professionals, value highly the special rapport that exists between the fans and the players. We thank Mary McAleese, the President of Ireland, and An Taoiseach Bertie Ahern T.D. for welcoming us, and we appreciate the time and attention that has been given by everyone to ensure the success of this special contest.
Television will allow millions of golf fans throughout the world to enjoy this edition of one of golf's most popular and challenging contests. In front of that vast audience, our duty - for spectators and Team Members - is to observe the sportsmanship that is the foundation of this international event. Samuel Ryder's intention almost 80 years ago was to foster international goodwill through the game of golf. That has not changed.
We respectfully request that everyone share in that ideal. Enjoy yourself, but respect the etiquette of the game. The rules are simple and founded on good manners. Watch every shot in silence and applaud the skills of all 24 players. They are not enemies, they are fellow sportsmen who are competing in golf's greatest event. The 2006 Ryder Cup deserves nothing less than your utmost respect and your dignified support. Thank you, and have a great three days.
