23 January 2006

Ryder Cup Europe LLP is delighted to announce that O2 Ireland has become an Official Partner of The 36th Ryder Cup, which takes place at The K Club, Straffan, Co. Kildare, Ireland, from September 22-24, 2006.

An Official Sponsor of The Ryder Cup since 2003, O2 has upgraded its sponsorship arrangement with The Ryder Cup to make it one of six Official Partners of The 2006 Ryder Cup with immediate effect.

Announcing the new Ryder Cup sponsorship agreement, Gerry McQuaid, Commercial Director, O2 Ireland, said: "We are delighted to be stepping up our involvement with The Ryder Cup. This new level of sponsorship enables us to associate our brand more closely with one of the world's largest sporting events, certainly the largest ever held in Ireland.

"Through the Smurfit European Open we have supported golf in Ireland since 1997. We have also been proud sponsors of Padraig Harrington since 2003 and have run the O2 Masters annually all over Ireland since 2002, a competition that gives golfers the chance to play some of Ireland's finest golf courses. It was a natural progression for us to become involved with The Ryder Cup and our decision to upgrade our sponsorship further demonstrates our long term commitment to Irish and European golf at all levels."

Richard Hills, Ryder Cup Director, said: "We are delighted to welcome O2 as an Official Partner of The 36th Ryder Cup at The K Club. We believe that O2's technological acumen and knowledge of both the Irish and international golf markets will ensure that The Ryder Cup benefits hugely from their increased involvement.

"The company is already a strong supporter of the Smurfit European Open and one of our leading players in Padraig Harrington, and we are confident that they will be a pro-active and dynamic marketing partner who will ensure that we take advantage of whatever technology is available in the rapidly evolving mobile telecommunications sector.

"Both The Ryder Cup and the Smurfit European Open are world class events and it is only through the support of market leading companies such as O2 that we are able to maintain a competitive edge in the world of professional sport. We look forward to working with O2 in the run up to what will be the single biggest event in Ireland's illustrious sporting history."

Padraig Harrington, who has had an endorsement agreement with O2 since 2003, said: "It's great to see one of my own sponsors getting behind The Ryder Cup. It's a huge coup for Ireland to be hosting this global event and O2 will play a key role in helping to bring The Ryder Cup to Irish people through it's innovative communications channels and services".

O2 will be launching several exciting Ryder Cup initiatives over the coming months for both golfers and non golfers all over Ireland such as Ryder Cup text alerts, Ryder Cup content downloads on O2 i-mode mobile phones, competitions for tickets to The Ryder Cup and many more promotional activities.
