At a Glance: Match 2
U.S. analysis: Leonard and Mahan both live in the Dallas area and are good friends, which makes them a natural pairing. Mahan is a Ryder Cup rookie but he did play on last year's Presidents Cup team, winning both of his foursomes matches (playing with Steve Stricker). While Leonard may have hit the key 45-foot putt in the Sunday's singles at the 1999 Ryder Cup, he's never won a match at this event.
Europe analysis: Consider this Nick Faldo's bombers group. Casey is 17th in driving distance on the PGA TOUR, and Stenson was fourth last year on the European Tour when he averaged 300.7 yards. Just like Mickelson and Kim, they'll take advantage of the setup at Valhalla. Casey, one of two Captains picks, will be eager to prove his worth. "We haven't played as a pair in foursomes before," Casey said of Stenson, "but I like his style of play and we both hit the ball a long way."
Notes: Stenson has already faced Leonard once this year in match-play competition, beating him 3 & 2 in the third-place game at the World Golf Championships-Accenture Match Play. ... Stenson has played well lately in the big events, finishing T3 at the Open Championship and T4 at the PGA Championship. Meanwhile, Mahan failed to make the cut in either event, shooting a combined 32 over.
Player reaction: "I don't think who we play matters to be honest -- it all comes down to who plays the best golf because we know there is no such thing as an easy draw." -- Paul Casey ... "Justin is obviously a veteran at these, so it's going to be great to play with him and have that experience." -- Hunter Mahan ... "It's good to see my name up there among the first eight guys going out." -- Henrik Stenson
Outlook: Leonard made his mark nine years ago, but that was the last Ryder Cup he's played in. Still, he's the veteran presence for the rookie Mahan, who has been in good form during the PGA TOUR Playoffs for the FedExCup. Stenson could be the key to this match, though; he's played well lately and had a strong run at the WGC-Accenture Match Play.
