Recap: Match 16

Print News

Instant analysis: Karlsson almost singlehandedly brought the Swedes back when he made six birdies in a seven-hole stretch that began at the 10th hole with the U.S. leading 2 up. His third birdie squared the match and the rest kept the Europeans in it as the match came down to the final hole. A win for Europe would have pulled them within a point entering the Singles but the halve at least kept their hopes alive of a fourth consecutive win.

Key moments: It would have to be the second shots by Karlsson and Mahan at the 18th hole. Mickelson was in the gunk to the right of the green when Mahan hit his approach to the bottom edge. Karlsson was the first to hit for his team. His ball landed on the side of the green and caught the slope, creeping closer and closer to the hole before stopping about 10 feet from the pin. Mahan putted first and the ball slid just right of the hole. Karlsson's putter finally failed him but the birdie pulled out the half-point.

Player report cards
Mickelson: A. He carried the team early, making four birdies and an eagle. He's playing with abandon and should be tough in Singles.
Mahan: B+. Mickelson was the got-to guy in this group, but Mahan came up with the two big birdies at the end to preserve the halve.
Stenson: B-. He was almost an afterthought with the way Karlsson was playing, but the Swede was solid overall.
Karlsson: A. His putter was on fire which could be a good omen for Singles where at least he won't have to face Tiger Woods as he did in his Ryder Cup debut.

What They Said
Mahan on the last putt:
""I don't know. There was just so much going on. You want to make it so bad and you don't want to force it. I at least made them get a 4."

Mickelson: "Robert Karlsson made six birdies. We withstood that for a halve. That's a good sign of the way we clutched up."
