Lookahead: Potential U.S. pairings

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- A look at potential pairings for the first day of the 37th Ryder Cup viewed through one man's prism:

Foursomes

Pairing Comment
Kenny Perry and J.B. Holmes The Kentucky natives march out first to whip the partisans into a patriotic froth. Captain Paul Azinger smartly plays to the home crowd.
Jim Furyk and Stewart Cink Games and personalities match up well and they have won together in this format before.
Steve Stricker and Hunter Mahan Reprising a successful Presidents Cup team, which provided two points for USA last year against the International team.
Phil Mickelson and Anthony Kim A solid anchor squad for the Americans. Mickelson is a respectable 2-3-3 in alternate shot.

Padraig Harrington and Lee Westwood Captain Nick Faldo sends out the veterans to counter the Kentucky duo and to try to steal the momentum.
Ian Poulter and Justin Rose English rookies have poise and confidence and they will have to accept baptism by fire.
Henrik Stenson and Robert Karlsson The Swedes have precious little foursome experience, but their winning Ryder Cup experience in 2006 is a plus.
Sergio Garcia and Paul Casey Their power games could form a lethal combination.

Ben Curtis and Chad Campbell The Open champion was among the automatic qualifiers who supported having the Texan on the squad.
Justin Leonard and Stewart Cink Team Nike marches out to putt the lights out on the Euros. This would be their first pairing together.
J.B. Holmes and Boo Weekley Just a friendly little round of golf among friends.
Phil Mickelson and Kenny Perry The popularity meter for the two men is off the charts. It's a good way for team USA to end the day to lead into the second round.

Miguel Angel Jimenez and Soren Hansen The veteran Spaniard should get along well with the 34-year-old rookie from Denmark.
Paul Casey and Robert Karlsson The former World Match Play champion and the European Tour's most recent champion could be a formidable team.
Sergio Garcia and Lee Westwood The two are 4-1-1 together, mostly in four-ball play.
