The 2010 Ryder Cup Green Drive
As well as being one of the world's greatest sporting spectacles, The 2010 Ryder Cup will also be one of the greenest.
The Venue
The Celtic Manor Resort is one of Wales' pre-eminent "green" businesses. Pioneers of the Welsh Assembly Government Green Dragon Awards, and currently recognised at Level 3 in the five-tier programme, they have undertaken considerable internal auditing, review and action across key environmental topics.
Out on the Twenty Ten course the management team work to a continually refined Environmental Plan which covers turf-grass, water, energy, nature, landscape, cultural heritage and waste. High levels of investment have gone into pollution prevention infrastructure and training of staff.
Ecological projects aimed at increasing biodiversity include sensitive habitat management of grasslands, woodlands, scrub, hedgerows, ponds and wetlands. Regular monitoring ensures environmental quality remains a key part of the resort's measurements of performance.
The Twenty Ten course is registered in the Golf Environment Organisation's on-line certification programme -- www.golfenvironment.org/certification
Staging
Our clear sustainability policies are driving down the footprint of The 2010 Ryder Cup. We are encouraging the use of public transport to and from the venue, car sharing, and are providing the most efficient park and ride options to reduce vehicle idling times. Wherever possible, local contractors and suppliers are being selected to service the event. They are each providing lower carbon, low waste products and services.
Additional measures to cut out waste at source, particularly in the provision and furnishing of temporary structures, will ensure 95% of waste produced goes on to recycling and reuse. Efficient use of energy and water, opportunities to introduce low carbon fuels, and a sophisticated programme of materials re-use and recycling is being applied across all major staging activities.
The drive is already engaging contractors and suppliers, and seeks to engage spectators by encouraging them to play their part.
