Wales welcomes The Ryder Cup in style
Wales welcomed to The 2010 Ryder Cup to its shores in spectacular style last night as thousands of fans, and the two teams, were treated to a musical extravaganza at the Millennium Stadium.
The Welcome to Wales concert certainly lived up to its name with stunning performances across the board during an evening when the two teams were introduced to the audience and the guest of honour, HRH Prince Charles, the Prince of Wales.
Guest presenter Catherine Zeta Jones made a welcome return to her homeland to deliver an opening address before Katherine Jenkins began the musical celebrations with a spellbinding performance, setting a tone that continued throughout the evening as the Lostprophets, Only Men Aloud and Shaheen Jafargholi and The Mark Jermin Stage School took to the stage. It was then left to Dame Shirley Bassey, returning to the city of her birth to perform for the first time in five years, to bring the concert to a fitting climax with ‘Goldfinger’, ‘Diamonds Are Forever’ and ‘Big Spender’.
The musical stars were introduced throughout the evening by Rhondda-born primetime television presenter Steve Jones who also welcomed the two teams and their wives and partners to the stage, led by Captains Colin Mongomerie and Corey Pavin.
The two teams had earlier been guests at Cardiff Castle for the traditional welcoming dinner, attended by HRH Prince Charles and the Rt Hon Carwyn Jones AM, First Minister of Wales, and other distinguished guests.
It all added up to night to remember and the stage is now set for golf’s greatest team event to unfold.
