Ryder Cup stars join galaxy of international celebrities at Welcome to Wales
The countdown to The 2010 Ryder Cup will enter its final, energetic phase in the iconic sporting setting of Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium as the players and Captains of Europe and the United States take a bow at the Welcome to Wales concert on September 29.
Captains Colin Montgomerie and Corey Pavin, plus all of the 24 players who contest The Ryder Cup just 36 hours later, will be introduced on stage at The 2010 Ryder Cup celebration concert starring international stars Dame Shirley Bassey and Katherine Jenkins and hosted by Catherine Zeta Jones and TV presenter Steve Jones.
The visit of the two teams to Welcome to Wales will be the final public appearance of the European and United States Teams away from the golfing arena before they launch their bid to win The Ryder Cup in the opening series of Fourballs at The Celtic Manor Resort, City of Newport, Wales, on the morning of Friday, October 1.
Twenty four global golfing superstars from both continents, and their partners, will enjoy the warmth of a stirring Welsh welcome under the gaze of honoured guests, HRH The Prince of Wales and the Rt. Hon. Carwyn Jones AM, First Minister of Wales, at the Millennium Stadium.
The Ryder Cup, the object of desire for both European Captain Montgomerie and his United States counterpart, Pavin, will also be on display as a gleaming reminder to everyone in the audience just what is at stake at The Twenty Ten Course over three days of intense competition.
The potent mix of sport and music promises to create a magnificent evening to remember in a wonderful Welsh amphitheatre and Montgomerie said: “Welcome to Wales will provide a glittering and enjoyable night for everyone attending the celebration concert.
“The serious business for Corey, myself and our Teams begins on Friday morning at The Celtic Manor Resort but Welcome to Wales is a perfect opportunity to take our minds off golf for a short time and to enjoy Welsh entertainment at its very best.”
Dame Shirley Bassey, Katherine Jenkins, Lostprophets, Only Men Aloud and Shaheen Jafargholi and The Mark Jermin Stage School will all perform during the 90-minute show. Guest presenter Catherine Zeta Jones makes a welcome return to her homeland to deliver a special opening speech for this very special concert to celebrate The 2010 Ryder Cup.
