In 353 days, The 2010 Ryder Cup will be underway and at the Year to Go celebration dinner at The Celtic Manor Resort last night the anticipation reached fever pitch as the countdown to golf’s greatest team event began.
Ryder Cup Partners and Sponsors, hospitality guests and media and so many people involved in bringing The Ryder Cup to Wales gathered in the magnificent Caernarfon Suite in The Celtic Manor Resort for a wonderful evening of celebration.
With BBC Radio 2’s Chris Evans taking to the stage as Master of Ceremonies, the evening began with a captivating video, produced by European Tour Productions, bringing the unique sense of drama, tension and raw emotion of The Ryder Cup to the fore.
The two men who will lead the best players from Europe and the United States, Colin Montgomerie and Corey Pavin, inevitably stole the show with Evans hosting a Q&A with the two Captains, giving a valuable insight into these two great golfers. The Ryder Cup is in their blood and that came across on the night with Pavin paying the ultimate compliment to his rival Captain when he said: “I would love to have 12 Colins in my team.”
Rhodri Morgan, First Minster for Wales, and George O’Grady, Chief Executive of The European Tour, and Sir Terry Matthews, three men who drive and vision brought The Ryder Cup to Wales, addressed the audience before two of the finest singers in Wales took to the stage. Bryn Terfel, the Opera legend, and star of the West End John Owen-Jones, were simply stunning, each giving a stirring performance before coming together for a grand finale which brought the roof down.
The countdown to The 2010 Ryder Cup has begun in earnest.
