Team USA wins 2&1
A tough break at the third hole for Westwood led to a 1-up lead for Stricker. Westwood, short of the green with his tee shot on the par 3, hit it heavy with his second shot and the ball rolled back to his feet. Stricker missed his 20-foot birdie putt, but won the hole with a par. It marked the first time in these matches that Westwood had trailed. With a 7-foot birdie putt on the fourth hole, Westwood quickly squared the match, then won his second consecutive hole on No. 5, draining a 6-foot birdie putt to take his first lead of the match at 1-up. Stricker squared the match with a magical approach to No. 12 that settled a foot from the hole and led to a birdie. Westwood found the water on the 13th hole, which meant Stricker's par was enough to take a 1-up lead. Stricker made a tricky 15-foot eagle putt to go 2-up on Westwood at No. 15. With that, Stricker became the first U.S. player to win the 15th hole all week. Two putts for Stricker on the 17th hole allowed him to win the first match of the day, 2&1 over Westwood. It was only Westwood's third loss in his last 18 matches.
Stricker's back nine allowed him to win the match. Trailing 1-down through 11 holes, Stricker roared back with birdies on 12 and 13 to go along with an eagle on No. 15 to build a 1-up lead before closing out the match on No. 17.
