Team Europe wins 1-up
Donald took an early 1-up lead over Furyk with a nice up-and-down for par at the par-3 third hole. With a short birdie on No. 5 -- his second in three holes -- Donald increased his lead to 2-up. Back to back birdies by Donald, this time a 6-footer on No. 6, gave him a 3-up lead over Furyk. A par was good enough to win the ninth hole for Furyk, who cut his lead to 2-down. Donald holed a downhill putt from 15 feet for birdie at No. 12 to take a 3-up lead. Furyk missed a short par putt lipping out on No. 13 to fall 3-down. Furyk birdied the 14th to cut his deficit to 2-down and followed it up with another birdie on No. 16 to fight back to 1-down. While Furyk fought back hard, it was too little too late as Donald walked off with a 1-up win.
After falling as much as 3-down through six holes, Furyk valiantly fought back to cut his deficit to 1-down with one hole to play. However, with his third shot on the par-5 18th hole, Furyk found the right, greenside bunker. Furyk splashed out to roughly 10 feet and after Donald lagged a 15-foot birdie try to tap-in range, the match was conceded.
Team USA Quote
"I battled hard. You know, he did enough to win the match. I needed to make a couple more putts, a little disappointed in the third shot at 18, kind of left myself a tough yardage and had to baby an iron in there and just hung it a little bit right and three-putted 13."
Team Europe Quote
"It feels great. Obviously I knew Jim was going to be a really tough opponent. He's a very similar player to me. He grinds it out. He put some pressure on me at the end, but I was glad to get a point."
