Match Overview
The atmosphere on the first tee was as electric as you could expect in this David vs. Goliath matchup between the world's No. 1 player and the unheralded Italian. The crowd was (mostly) polite to Woods as he entered the teeing area, but the explosion of support for Molinari showed how highly anticipated this match would be. Molinari didn't disappoint when he knocked his long approach to three feet and nailed the birdie to take the lead and make a statement that he wasn't backing down at all. But Woods soon began to show the form that made him one of the most dominant players in history, as he went 8 under through nine holes and turned a two-hole deficit into a 4-up advantage. Woods then closed out the match quickly, reasserting himself as a dominant force in golf.
Key Moment
On the par 4 12th, Tiger Woods, already riding a classic Tiger streak of birdies, holed out for eagle. It put him 3-up at the time but took the fight out of the European crowd and served notice to Francesco Molinari that the match was all but over.
Team USA Quote
"Francesco got off to a quick start, but I just stayed patient. I just felt, stay calm, stay patient, stay within myself and keep doing what I know I can do. And it all turned, and I did."
--Tiger Woods
Team Europe Quote
"That was the feeling, yeah, yeah. Luckily I knew I could count on these guys, and obviously my match, I knew it was going to be hard. I had a good start, and I think I played all right. But, you know, if Tiger plays like that, there's not much you can do."
--Francesco Molinari
