Match Overview
With a birdie on the first hole, Johnson jumped out to a 1-up lead. Another birdie on the second hole gave Johnson a short-lived 2-up lead, as Harrington bounced back with a birdie on No. 3 to cut Johnson's lead to 1-up. After a great approach to 3 feet from the rough on No. 5, Harrington makes a birdie and squares the match. Johnson takes the lead right back at No. 6 when a 15-foot birdie effort falls in to get back to 1-up. A solid approach at No. 8 set up a short birdie for Johnson, who extended his lead to 2-up. A second consecutive birdie on No. 9 led to a 3-up lead for Johnson. On the 11th hole, Johnson went 4-up after knocking down a 10-foot birdie -- his sixth of the day. Johnson made birdie to Harrington's bogey for a 5-up lead on the 13th hole. Harrington parred the 14th hole, which was good for a win, and cut the deficit to 4-down with four to play. Harrington won the 15th hole with an 8-foot birdie to go 3-down with three to play. After Harrington won a couple of holes, Johnson closed out the match with a 15-foot par putt on No. 16 to win, 3&2.
Key Moment
Johnson was in control right from the start winning the first two holes out of the gate and building a lead as big as 5-up through 13 holes. Harrington fought back with two late birdies, but it wasn't enough.
Team USA Quote
"Today it was one of those days where I wanted to see how many under par I could shoot. I put myself in position for a lot of birdies and I made them."
