T.J.'s Team USA Weekly Analysis: May 17-24

The 38th Ryder Cup will be held Oct. 1-3, 2010, at The Celtic Manor Resort in City of Newport, Wales. Each week leading up to the matches, PGA.com Interactive Producer T.J. Auclair will provide analysis of the top 20 U.S. players in the latest standings. Go to the bottom of the page to learn how the U.S. Ryder Cup team is determined.

T.J.'s Take: It wasn't the prettiest of weeks for Mahan - especially on the final day. Over his last five holes on Sunday at TPC Four Seasons at Las Colinas, Mahan recorded three bogeys, a par and a double bogey for a back-nine 40 and a final-round 75 to finish in a tie for 50th. The successfully made cut did help Mahan pick up a few points, but the 75 was his second-worst final-round score of the 10 cuts he's made this season.

T.J.'s Take: With rounds of 67-68-72-67, Johnson snatched a tie for seventh at the HP Byron Nelson Championship for his third top-10 finish of the season. It also marked Johnson's best finish since his win at Pebble Beach in February, which is good news for the long-hitting 20-something, seeing as the U.S. Open is at Pebble Beach in just a few weeks. Johnson should be encouraged and proud of Sunday's final round, too. He came out of the gate with three consecutive bogeys beginning on No. 3, but rattled off three birdies in the next four holes to make the turn at even par.

T.J.'s Take: Cink is the first player to make a move up in the standings this week, jumping one spot after a tie for 23rd in Dallas. Cink, the reigning Open Champion, has been struggling to find consistency in his game this season, but something must have clicked in the Lone Star state as he was able to make the cut for the third time in his last seven starts and avoid three weekends off in as many starts.

T.J.'s Take: Crane is quickly becoming one of the hottest players on Tour. After a tie for fourth in the Players Championship, Crane managed to bounce back from a third-round 74 with a final-round 66 in Dallas to grab a tie for seventh place. It was Crane's fourth top-10 of the season and his second top-10 in as many starts since his lone missed cut of the season, which came at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans. For his efforts, Crane moved up two spots this week into the top 10.

T.J.'s Take: Holmes missed his only cut of the season a few weeks back at Quail Hollow. After that, he rattled off a tie for 13th at both the Players Championship and the Valero Texas Open. He was bound to cool off in Dallas and that seemed evident after a 73 in the first round had Holmes in danger of missing the cut. However, he's been consistently resilient throughout the season and showed that off once again in Dallas, bouncing back in the second round to the tune of a 67. He wasn't much of a factor on the weekend, but Holmes turned a potential missed cut into a tie for 43rd.

T.J.'s Take: Overton has become one of the more dynamic and fun to watch younger players on Tour over the course of the last two years. This season has been feast or famine and in Dallas, Overton had a Texas-sized feast. Overton made 16 birdies for the week at TPC Four Seasons at Las Colinas. At 8 under for the tournament, he finished in a tie for second. He was also a runner up at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans. This week he played his way into the top 20.

Team USA Qualifying Process

The United States points system will determine the top eight players for the 2010 United States Ryder Cup Team on August 15. In addition, Captain Corey Pavin selects four players on Sept. 7, 2010, to complete the United States Team. Points are based upon the following:

-- Prize money earned in the 2009 major championships (Masters, U.S. Open, British Open and PGA Championship): One point is awarded for every $1,000 earned; all U.S. players making the cut will earn points.

-- Prize money earned in 2010 "Official" events from Jan. 1 through Aug. 15: One point is awarded for every $1,000 earned, excluding the major championships, events played opposite major championships and events played opposite World Golf Championships; all U.S. players making the cut will earn points.

-- Prize money earned for the 2010 major championships: (Masters, U.S. Open, British Open, and the PGA Championship). Two points are awarded for every $1,000 earned; all U.S. players making the cut will earn points.

Prize money earned in 2010 events played opposite the major championships and opposite World Golf Championships events between Jan. 1 and the PGA Championship, Aug. 15 -- one-half point will be awarded for every $1,000 earned; all U.S. players making the cut will earn points.
