After a very impressive Ryder Cup debut at Valhalla in 2008, where he was Team USA's top points producer with 3.5 in five matches, Mahan will be expected to carry the same weight at Celtic Manor. Earlier this year, he came from four strokes back to win the Waste Management Phoenix Open by a stroke over Rickie Fowler. That he cracked his driver early in the final round, replaced it with a new one, and then had an eagle on the par-5 13th hole and a pair of birdies on the 14th and 16th holes to finish at 16-under 268 was a testament to his resilience and determination. With the victory, Mahan became the eighth U.S.-born player still in his 20s to win more than one tournament. Mahan then joined Dustin Johnson, Anthony Kim, Sean O'Hair and Camilo Villegas as the only players in their 20s with three or more PGA TOUR victories when he captured the World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational.
