Xirrus named Official Wi-Fi Network Supplier

On-course wi-fi completes provision of online services to fans after rail and bus operators confirm Ryder Cup journeys will also be Wi-Fi enabled

Spectators at The 2014 Ryder Cup will be able to access Wi-Fi throughout the course at Gleneagles thanks to an official network supplier agreement with Xirrus®.

Xirrus is the leader in high-performance wireless networks and will supply technology to The Ryder Cup that includes multi-core processing. This will enable tournament organisers to provide wi-fi to very large densities of mobile users.

Available throughout the entire Gleneagles site, this will provide fans with access to on-demand video, interactive content, social media apps and location-based services.

The announcement completes the Wi-Fi picture for Ryder Cup Europe, which is now able to offer spectators attending the event online services from the start of their travels through to the furthest point on the Gleneagles course. This is thanks to investment from Scottish Government, Transport Scotland and ScotRail in Wi-Fi capability on trains serving the event, as well as Wi-Fi on all Park and Ride buses.

Richard Hills, European Ryder Cup Director, said: “Wireless services bring huge advantages to the whole golfing experience, by providing spectators with faster and easier access to digital content.

“From a technology perspective, Xirrus was able to meet the very specific requirements of the golf course environment, providing us with complete coverage and the ability to handle huge capacity and bandwidth demands with no dropouts. By partnering with Xirrus for The 2014 Ryder Cup we are going to take this performance to the next level and truly revolutionise the way we deliver digital content and engage with fans at the event.”

The Xirrus announcement follows a hugely successful wireless deployment at the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth Club in May 2013, which provided fans with access to a raft of services such as on-demand video and digital content to improve their event day experience.

“The Ryder Cup is the biggest golfing event on the planet and we’re delighted to have formed this exclusive partnership with Ryder Cup Europe for this year’s event,” said Sean Larner, VP International at Xirrus.

“Together with our reseller partner AJP Networking, we had great success with the rollout at the BMW PGA Championship and we’ll again be at the heart of truly enhancing the fan experience and enjoyment of the hotly contested Cup through a wealth of interactive content.

“The eyes of the world will be on this tournament and Xirrus prides itself in being able to deliver high performance in the most demanding environments. The Wi-Fi network will enable Ryder Cup Europe to maximise fan engagement through a variety of interactive applications, both for those at the event itself, and those watching from home.”
