2016 Ryder Cup: Timeline of key events, schedule

Planning for a Ryder Cup is no easy task. With Ryder Cup dates and venues locked in years in advance, there's so much that goes into the preparation for the biennial matches. Even before the final putt dropped at the 2014 Ryder Cup in Gleneagles, Scotland, work was well underway at 2016 host site Hazeltine National in Chaska, Minn.

Here’s a look at a basic timeline of events and dates you need to know for the 2016 Ryder Cup, keeping in mind that some key dates and procedures are subject to change.

Feburary 2015

- Captain selection. The Ryder Cup Task Force that met a handul of times this winter chose Davis Love III to captain the 2016 U.S. Ryder Cup team. It'll be Love's second stint as captain. The task force also announced several changes regarding the timeline for the selection of the team.

- Vice captain. Tom Lehman was named one of Love's four assistants.

March 2015

- U.S. Players will start earning points toward the 2016 Ryder Cup at the WGC-Cadillac Championship. The four WGC events in 2015 will earn 1 point per $1,000 earned.

April 2015

- The Masters. The first major of 2015 will be an opportunity for the U.S.-born players to gain 1 point for $1,000 earned.

May 2015

- U.S. players will earn points at The Players Championship in 2015 (1 point for every $2,000 earned).

Summer 2015

- Random draw for tickets opens on June 22, 2015.

- The U.S. Open. U.S. players will have opportunities to earn points at the U.S. Open (in June), the Open Championship (July) and the PGA Championship (August). These majors will earn 1 point for every $1,000 earned.

Fall 2015

- Year out. A Year-Out Celebration is usually held in the host city of the Ryder Cup.

- Random draw for tickets closes on Sept. 30, 2015.

- Notification of random draw results by Oct. 12, 2015.

2016

- Beginning Jan. 1, U.S. players will earn 1 point for every $1,000 earned in regular PGA Tour events through the Aug. 28 Barclays.

April 2016

- 2016 Masters. The Masters marks a significant opportunity to gain Ryder Cup points. Two points are awarded for every $1,000 earned.

May/June 2016

- Uniform fitting. The captain, usually right around the start of June, will go to a PGA Tour event to gather potential U.S. players and caddies to have them in for a fitting to obtain sizes for clothes. June 2016

- 2016 U.S. Open. Two points are awarded for every $1,000 earned; all U.S. players making the cut will earn points.

July 2016

- 2016 Open Championship. Two points are awarded for every $1,000 earned; all U.S. players making the cut will earn points.

- 2016 PGA Championship. Two points are awarded for every $1,000 earned; all U.S. players making the cut will earn points.

- Vice captains. This is also typically the timeframe in which a Captain will announce his other vice captains.

August 2016

- The Top Eight. Eight of the 12 members of the U.S. Team will be named on points earned following the conclusion of The Barclays, which is scheduled to conclude Sunday Aug. 28, 2016. This new timetable gives two additional weeks for players to earn Ryder Cup qualifying points.

September/October 2016

- Captain's Picks. U.S. Ryder Cup Captain Davis Love III will select three of his four Captain's Picks after the conclusion of the BMW Championship, which is scheduled to conclude on Sunday, Sept. 11, 2016. His fourth pick will take place Sunday evening after the TOUR Championship, Sept. 25, 2016. This new timetable also is pushed back two weeks.

- 41st Ryder Cup Matches. Sept. 30-Oct. 2, the 41st Ryder Cup Matches will take place at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minn.
