Team USA Ryder Cup uniform designs complete
Chances are Team USA will not be wearing red, white and blue knitted sweaters emblazoned with USA and 2014 and topped by matching Bonbon ear-muff hats with tassels when Tom Watson’s squad parades into the Opening Ceremonies of the Ryder Cup at Gleneagles.
But there is a good chance the fashion police will be more favorable of what they see in September.
Dressing sports teams for international competitions is always a risky business – who can forget the Sunday shirts plastered with historic portraits worn by Team USA at the 1999 Ryder Cup at Brookline, or the U.S. Olympic team dressed in French fedoras and trench coats in Alberville, France, in 1992?
But given Watson’s always sharp, classic golf attire and attention to detail, we can be fairly confident that Team USA will make even the snootiest fashion critic smile.
Watson and Ralph Lauren Corporation, which designed the U.S. Olympic uniforms and will do the same for the American Ryder Cup team, have completed their designs for the clothes that Team USA will wear during the three-day biennial matches. The designs have not yet been released to the public, but we can expect to see the line in the coming months.
Watson has been a spokesman for Ralph Lauren for more than 20 years.
"Ralph Lauren is a quintessential American brand that has always connected us with the best in sports," said PGA of America President Ted Bishop. "How fitting it is that the company's longstanding partnership with Tom Watson culminates in outfitting this year's U.S. Ryder Cup Team."
For the first time ever, fans in the U.S. will be able to purchase the same attired worn by Team USA in the Ryder Cup. Details have yet to be finalized, but it is expected that the uniforms will be available in select retail stores as well as on Ralph Lauren’s web site and PGA.com’s online Shop .
"The Ryder Cup has a history and a following that is unrivaled around the world, and we are honored to be selected by the PGA of America to design the uniforms for our esteemed golfers as they represent America," said David Lauren, Executive Vice President of Advertising, Marketing and Corporate Communications for Ralph Lauren. "We have been proud to work with Tom Watson for more than 20 years and we wish him and Team USA the best of luck ahead of this year's Ryder Cup."
