03 August 2006

Europe's Junior Ryder Cup Team, to play against the USA at the Celtic Manor Resort from September 18-19, has been announced with eight countries represented in the 12 strong side.

The Team consists of six boys and six girls who will take on America in a series of fourballs and mixed fourballs over the two day event at Celtic Manor, with Europe looking to secure a third successive Junior Ryder Cup after their successes of 2002 at The K Club in Ireland and 2004 at the Westfield Group Country Club in America.

Europe's 2008 Ryder Cup Captain Nick Faldo will be at the Celtic Manor Resort keeping a close eye on proceedings as the Junior Ryder Cup players, all of whom are under the age of 16, get the chance to experience the thrill of team competition.

The Junior Ryder Cup Team, listed below, was decided at last weekend's European Young Masters presented by Rolex event, which was played at the Murhof Golf Club in Austria.

Junior Ryder Cup Captain Andy Ingram, who was in charge of the victorious Junior Ryder Cup Team of 2004, said: "The Junior Ryder Cup is a wonderful event and gives the kids a great experience of team golf in a great environment. All the kids will get the opportunity to play, and the standard of golf that they produce is really fantastic.

"I was at the European Young Masters and from what I can see, the standard of these youngsters is just getting better and better -- we are going to have a great coupe of days at Celtic Manor in September."

Sergio Garcia won the inaugural European Young Masters at Wentworth Club in England in 1995, thereby qualifying for the first European Junior Ryder Cup Team which travelled to Rochester, New York State, in September that year.

Garcia was the first player to represent Europe in the both that junior and senior Ryder Cup Teams and has been hugely supportive of the event ever since his arrival on the scene in 1995.

The Spaniard has met and welcomed every subsequent Junior Ryder Cup Team, posing for photographs and signing autographs, for the next generation of golfing stars.

The Junior Ryder Cup has provided a vital stepping stone in the career of Spain's Paula Marti, who played in home soil at the San Roque Club in Spain in 1997, when the USA recorded their only success by 7-5. Belgium's Nicolas Colsaerts also played in 1997 and 1999 before graduating to The European Tour.
