It is easy to understand why Captain Nick Faldo is delighted to have the flamboyant Ian Poulter as a member of his Team. He made a successful Ryder Cup debut as a Member of European Captain Bernhard Langer's triumphant Team at Oakland Hills in 2004 and, having enjoyed the experience so much, made no secret of his burning desire to play a part in this year's contest against the United States. The Englishman started 2008 in fine fashion with a tie for ninth place finish at the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship, but undoubtedly the highlight of his campaign came at The 137th Open Championship at Royal Birkdale, where he pushed eventual winner Padraig Harrington all the way after compiling a stunning round of 69 in treacherous conditions on a dramatic final day. Poulter picked up €563,139 for his runner-up finish, but perhaps more importantly proved beyond all doubt that he has the temperament to match his undoubted natural ability. Speaking afterwards, he said: "I don't think I've ever enjoyed a week as much as I have this week." That quote might need some revision if Poulter were to play a leading role at Valhalla.
