14484Westwood, who sent his first shot in morning foursomes booming down the fairway, did do again and rookie Hansen found the middle of the fairway with his first Ryder Cup shot. Weekley's first Ryder up shot matched Westwood's, but Kentucky bomber Holmes' drive was huge, hugging the left side of the fairway. Weekly missed the green on the left-hand side and Holmes landed his shot 10 feet from the pin. Weekley chipped to within a foot. Westwood landed about 15 feet from the pin with his second shot but missed the birdie putt on the left side of the cup. Holmes holed his putt to win the hole and put the U.S. 1-up.
25054Westwood rolled in a 12-foot birdie putt and Weekley missed a 6-footer, meaning Europe squared the match.
32063Westwood came up short with a 6-iron, but Hansen was in the bunker on the par 3. Weekley took a 6-iron to just a foot closer than Westwood. Holmes took a 7-iron but didn't catch it and was 20 yards short of the green. He almost holed the chip, then holed the putt. Westwood's putt was conceded after putting to within two feet to halve the hole. All square.
43754Big-hitting Holmes tried to find the green but was wayward to the left and hit the crowd, while Weekley was short. Westwood and Hansen both hit solid drives. Hansen chipped to within a foot and had a birdie conceded. Weekley was short with his chip and Holmes chipped to eight feet. Weekley just missed his putt from 15 feet and Holmes shaved the right edge of the cup. With the win, Europe goes 1-up.
54634Westwood's fine approach shot landed 15 feet from the flag and Holmes' landed right next to him but spun back five feet. Holmes missed his 18-footer, but Westwood saw its line and holed his putt to put Europe 2-up.
65004Weekley's approach shot flew through the back of the green. Holmes was in a tricky position in the deep rough and duffed it 10 yards before finding the water with his next shot. Hansen found the middle of the green. Westwood was wide right, but chipped to 8 feet and holed out. Weekley holed an 8-footer for par to halve the hole. Europe still 2-up.

Hansen joined him, having safely negotiated the water, but Westwood was just on the edge, having stayed out of the bunker. Holmes found more rough on his second shot. Hansen's eagle putt from 15 feet was short and Weekley's attempt from a similar distance broke to the right. Hansen putted from three feet for birdie and Weekley knocked his in to halve the hole. Europe still 2-up.

Weekley's tee shot dropped about 10 feet from the pin but rolled back down the hill. Weekley hit the hole and spun out before holing for par. Holmes holed his birdie putt up the hill from 20 feet to get the Kentucky crowd going, but Westwood rolled in another birdie to halve the hole. It remains Europe 2-up.
94164Hansen's sand wedge landed nine feet from the flag. Holmes drives 60 yards past everyone else and his second shot spun back to about five feet. Holmes holed his birdie putt for the second successive hole to win it for the U.S. and make it Europe 1-up.

Westwood then launched it out of the rough to 20 feet from the flag. Holmes fluffed his chip, stayed in the rough and then chipped way past. Weekley chipped to 3 feet. Westwood's putt shaved the right-hand side of the hole, then Hansen missed on the left-hand side. Weekley holed his par putt to halve the hole in 4, meaning the U.S. is still 1-up.
165114Weekley and Hansen sent their drives straight down the middle of the fairway, while the big-hitting Holmes and Westwood hugged the right side. Hansen sent his second shot from 177 yards into the rough behind the green. Westwood found the right side of the green with his wedge shot, but Weekley's iron shot landed 2 feet from the pin. Holmes pulled his shot left into the rough and chipped past the hole with his next. Hansen holed a superb chip from the edge of the green for a birdie 3 and Europe conceded Weekley's putt to halve the hole on 3s. U.S. is still 1-up.
174774Hansen pulled his tee shot way left into the trees while the other three found the fairway, Holmes unleashing another bomb to finish about 100 yards further on. After taking a drop in the trees, Hansen hit a superb wedge to 5 feet. Weekley did it again, though, landing his second shot 2 feet from the pin before it spun back to 6 feet. Westwood pitched inside the American, 4 feet from the cup. Holmes trumped them all, landing his second shot 2 feet in what fast became an enthralling final match of the day. Holmes tapped in his for birdie to put the pressure on Westwood. The Englishman was unfazed, however, and hit the center of the cup, sendng the match to the 18th hole.

Weekley landed his tee shot in Floyds Creek and Holmes' huge drive hit the fairway but trickled into the water as well, giving Europe a golden opportunity. Westwood and Hansen both found the fairway. Westwood found the heart of the green with his second shot, and Hansen hit the left side of the green 20 feet from the flag. Holmes left his 9-iron well short of the green and Weekley found the bunker, which he chipped out of but rolled some 10 feet past the hole. Holmes' long putt from off the front apron of the green shaved the hole. Westwood rolled his putt to two feet. Hansen's putt was even closer and the American pair conceded the hole. Europe salvages a half-point to finish the day down by three, 5 1/2 to 2 1/2.
