Sept. 22-28, 2025 Bethpage Black Course, Farmingdale, NY

With The 42nd Ryder Cup almost upon us, rydercup.com takes a look back at the best quotes from previous editions.

We start this week's throwback with the 2010 tournament at Celtic Manor, where Colin Montgomerie led Europe against Corey Pavin's United States. While Rory McIlroy made his Ryder Cup debut in Wales, Captain Montgomerie opted to give a Captain's Pick to Edoardo Molinari, ensuring Europe would have both Molinari brothers in their side. Pavin used two of his four picks to select debutant Rickie Fowler and World Number One Tiger Woods.

The week was heavily affected by inclement weather, with torrential rain affecting matches to the extent that play finished on Monday. Heading into the singles matches, Europe led 9½ - 6½ and eventually claimed victory on a dramatic day. Graeme McDowell secured the decisive point, defeating Hunter Mahan 3&1 to recapture the trophy.

Here is a selection of the best quotes from that wild week in Wales...

"There was a reason we put Graeme where we put him and it worked out brilliantly." - Colin Montgomerie, on selecting reigning US Open Champion Graeme McDowell to go out last in the singles.

"The US Open felt like the back nine with my dad back in Portrush compared to this." - Graeme McDowell, on the nerves he felt during the final day's play.

"It's great to bring The Ryder Cup back to Europe. It has been the best week of my life, this is the best event in golf by far." - Rory McIlroy, on the his first Ryder Cup experience.

"It means everything for him (Seve). We played from the heart today, we brought this trophy back. It's a special day for European golf." - Ian Poulter, on the influence of Seve Ballesteros, who couldn't attend the tournament due to illness.

"This is what momentum is all about - you get it and it changes the whole thing. Especially (Tiger) Woods, for him to lose 6&5 will have an effect on the whole of their team. He's their top player and the World Number One." - Colin Montgomerie,  after Luke Donald and Lee Westwood beat Steve Stricker and Tiger Woods in their foursomes match.

The 2012 Ryder Cup took place at Medinah Country Club in Illinois. José María Olazábal took charge of Europe against Davis Love III's American team in an even more emotionally-charged week than usual. This was the first Ryder Cup held since the death of European legend and Ryder Cup stalwart Seve Ballesteros.

A romantic European win didn't look on the cards on Saturday evening, with Love III's side leading 6-10. What happened next is the stuff of fiction.

Europe rallied hard on Sunday, winning eight matches, including the first five of the day. Martin Kaymer's 1UP win over Steve Stricker guaranteed victory and proved the perfect tribute to Seve.

Here are selection of the best quotes from a thrilling week at Medinah...

"Jose Maria told me: 'We need your point. I don't care how you do it, just deliver.' But I like those, it was straightforward." - Martin Kaymer, on the message given to him by Olazábal on Sunday.

"I have no doubt in my mind that he was with me all day, because there's no chance I would have won my match if he wasn't there." - Sergio Garcia, on the spirit of Seve Ballesteros.

"There was a buzz in the team room last night that didn't feel like we had a four-point deficit." - Ian Poulter, on believing victory was possible on Saturday night.

"I got here in the front of a police car, at least it wasn't in the back!" - Rory McIlroy, on needing a state trooper to take him to the course after confusion over his tee time.
