Bjørn overwhelmed by support
Thomas Bjørn said he has been overwhelmed by the support he has received since being unveiled as the 2018 European Ryder Cup captain on Tuesday.
Bjørn has received a number of messages of support over the past 24 hours from within the world of golf as well as the wider community, including a special video message from one of his sporting heroes, former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard.
The Dane spent Wednesday afternoon meeting the media in his first official engagement as European captain, speaking to several broadcasters including Sky Sports, the Golf Channel and Danish TV channel Viasat, as well as members of the written media.
“It’s still a bit overwhelming,” said the 45 year old. “It’s been an interesting couple of days. My phone had a life of its own yesterday. There were a lot of things going on and it’s going to take a bit of time to sink in.
“Christmas will come at a nice time as I can let this settle in and really get to work in the New Year. That doesn’t mean I’m not doing things at the moment, but it will be nice to have a few days to get to terms with everything and the overwhelming messages that have come my way.”
Bjørn, who has featured on three winning Ryder Cup teams as a player and has been a vice captain four times, will lead Europe’s bid to regain the Ryder Cup when he captains the team at Le Golf National in Paris, France, from September 28-30, 2018.
