Sept. 22-28, 2025 Bethpage Black Course, Farmingdale, NY

With less than two months until The 42nd Ryder Cup begins at Le Golf National in France, rydercup.com looks back on the best quotes from previous Ryder Cups.

This week, our attention turns to the 1993 and 1995 editions, with Bernard Gallacher captaining Europe for both tournaments. Tom Watson was Gallacher's opposite number for the event in 1993, when Europe once again opted for The Belfry as host venue.

The Brabazon course had served the Europeans well in recent years, with victories recorded on the course in Warwickshire in both 1985 and 1989. While Gallacher used two of his captain's picks to select Seve Ballesteros and José María Olazábal, Watson included 51 year old Raymond Floyd, who had captained the team in 1989.

Play was delicately poisted heading into Sunday, with Europe leading 8½ - 7½, however the Americans came out on top in the Singles to secure a 13-15 win.

Let's take a look at some of the best quotes from that week 25 years ago...

"I think everybody was stretched to where he had never been before." - Nick Faldo, on the challenge the Europeans faced.

"The tension, the tension." - Costantino Rocca, on his feelings during the Sunday singles match against Davis Love III.

"We should be able to carry the ball 230 yards. It's amazing what happens when the pressure is on." - Colin Montgomerie, on the unique environment of The Ryder Cup.

"That's as nervous as I've ever been in my life." -  Love III, on his Sunday victory over Rocca.

"There is nothing like winning The Ryder Cup, because you are playing for something besides yourself." - Tom Watson, on the team element of the tournament.

Two years later, Gallacher took his European team to Oak Hill Country Club in New York. For the first time since 1983, the Europeans faced the prospect of the American team winning three Ryder Cups on the spin.

It seemed as if Lanny Wadkins' side were in prime position to secure that third consecutive Ryder Cup after taking the overnight lead of 7-9 on Saturday. However, Gallacher rallied his team on Sunday and Europe came out on top, winning 14½ - 13½.

The 1995 Ryder Cup

Europe won seven of the 12 Sunday singles matches, including a decisive 1UP victory for rookie Philip Walton against Jay Haas in the penultimate match.

Here are a selection of the best quotes from Europe's fourth Ryder Cup success in six editions...

"I can't tell you what this means to me." - Bernard Gallacher, on the joy of winning his first Ryder Cup as captain in his third attempt.

"Maybe the Americans know me now." - Philip Walton, on his part in Europe's success.

"Everything but my putter was moving." - Nick Faldo, on his Sunday singles win over Curtis Strange.

"On a big, tough course like Oak Hill, the best strikers of the ball will come through. Rocca is just churning it out." - Gallacher, on Rocca's part in his 6&5 victory alongside Sam Torrance over Jeff Maggert and Davis Love III.

"I think you could probably put Seve with the paper boy and he could probably bring him through." - Peter Jacobsen, on the influence of Ballesteros on the Europeans.
