Another big step has been taken in the race to qualify automatically for Thomas Bjørn’s European Ryder Cup side, following the US PGA Championship in St Louis, Missouri.
Brooks Koepka took home the Wanamaker Trophy in the year’s final Major Championship, but Jon Rahm finished in a share of fourth to sit third in the World Points List and fifth in the European Points List.
Open Champion Francesco Molinari enjoyed another fine week, taking a share of sixth with fellow European and 2016 qualifier Thomas Pieters. Molinari, who won The Open Championship last month, tops the European Points List and is 1,663,799 points clear of Justin Rose in second.
Tyrrell Hatton also earned a top ten finish to cement his position in the top four of the European Points List, alongside Molinari, Rose and last season’s Race to Dubai Champion Tommy Fleetwood.
Rory McIlroy, Alex Noren and Ian Poulter join Rahm as the four automatic qualifiers from the World Points List as things stand. While McIlroy and Poulter finished T50 and T31 respectively, Noren missed the cut at Bellerive Country Club.
There are now three remaining events left on the European Tour International Schedule that will offer up Ryder Cup points. Thorbjørn Olesen is among those with a chance to impress Bjørn at this week’s Nordea Masters, before the tour heads to the D+D REAL Czech Masters in Prague.
The final qualifying event will be the Made in Denmark Tournament, which takes place from August 30 – September 2. In addition to the eight automatic qualifiers, Bjørn has four wildcards to select to join his team at Le Golf National in September.
