An emotional Jon Rahm called beating Tiger Woods to secure a vital Ryder Cup point for Europe "the best feeling of my life".

After a fast start from the Americans saw them close the gap to a single point on Sunday, the Spanish rookie helped steady the ship with a 2 and 1 win against 14-time Major Champion Woods.

Europe went on to claim five more points on their way to clinching a thumping 17.5-10.5 victory at Le Golf National.

After victory was confirmed, Rahm had countryman and Ryder Cup great Seve Ballesteros and his grandfather on his mind.

He said: "There is a lot going on for me right now – the memory of Seve (Ballesteros) and my grandpa, who would love to be here right now, who passed away at the PGA, he was my biggest fan so there's a lot going through (my mind).

“And to beat Tiger, one of the all time greatest, if not the greatest, on a Sunday at a pivotal point - I was aware of it - it is the best feeling of my life."

Rahm led for large spells of his singles match after winning the first and seventh holes but an eagle at the ninth and a birdie at the 12th brought Woods level.

The World Number Eight responded brilliantly, winning the 13th and 14th to go two up with four holes remaining.

With Europe struggling in other matches, Rahm suffered a setback at the 16th when he missed a three-footer for par to allow Woods to close the gap to one.

But he did not let that derail his charge, smashing a 356-yard drive down the 17th and hitting his approach to four feet before rolling in to claim his first-ever Ryder Cup point in his third session.

Speaking about his brilliant response at the 17th, Rahm said: "If you break it down, aside from what happened at that point, I was one up going to the 17th. All the pressure was on Tiger.

"A par putt would probably win it. But once he missed the fairway, I was just beyond focused on hitting that fairway and I hit it right on my spot about as far as I can hit a drive.

"It was a really good redemption feeling to make that putt after missing on the 16th."
