Former AC Milan and Chelsea striker and current Ukraine national team manager Andriy Shevchenko has been named as the latest Ambassador for The 2018 Ryder Cup at Le Golf National in Paris.
The Ukrainian, an accomplished golfer who played a European Challenge Tour event back in 2013, becomes the second 2018 Ryder Cup Ambassador after French world record-setting sailor Armel Le Cléac’h was announced last week.
Shevchenko began his career at Dynamo Kyiv in 1994 before five years later moving to AC Milan, where he would become a European football legend thanks to his goal-scoring prowess, scoring the winning penalty in a shoot-out at the end of the 2003 Champions League final to beat rivals Juventus.
He moved to Chelsea for almost €44 million in 2006, before going back to his old club AC Milan on loan for the 2008-2009 season and then returning Dynamo Kyiv, where he finished his career and retired from the game in 2012.
In July of last year, Shevchenko was named as manager of the Ukrainian national team and he has so far guided them to three victories and two draws in six matches.
“I’m so happy and so proud to be an Ambassador for The Ryder Cup,” said Shevchenko, who received the Ballon d’Or in 2004 as the world’s best footballer. “It’s a great event, one of the best events in sport.
“I’ve heard about the course at Le Golf National and it’s beautiful. Speaking to some of the players, they are all extremely excited about it, especially looking forward to it and I am sure that this time, Europe will beat America.”
