Rahm rolls at The American Express; Thompson Makes Rankings Debut

The Jon Rahm success train shows no signs of slowing down any time soon, as the fiery Spaniard picked up his fourth victory in six starts with a win at The American Express. The win propelled Rahm to No. 1 in the FedExCup Rankings for the first time in his career.

“I felt in command of my game,” Rahm said after his victory. “Every time I felt like this in the past I've ended up going on to win, just because it takes a lot of pressure off a lot of parts of my game knowing that basically I'm going to hit the shot that I'm envisioning. And that's a really unique zone to put yourself in.”

And while Rahm continues to lead the Ryder Cup Europe European Points list, the headline on the U.S. side comes from a new face in the rankings – Davis Thompson.

Thompson, a Georgia graduate in his rookie TOUR season, held a share of the 54-hole lead heading into Sunday’s final round, before ultimately finishing in solo second after a pair of costly mistakes in the closing three holes allowed Rahm to pull ahead. Despite the stumble, the finish was Thompson’s highest on TOUR and propelled him into the Top 100 in the Ryder Cup U.S. Rankings for the first time ever, rocketing into the Top 20 at No. 16.

“Competing against the best in the world is my dream and I did that today and proved that I can hang with 'em.” Davis said. “It was a lot of fun.”

A trio of Americans rounded out the top 5 this week, with Chris Kirk and 2020 Ryder Cup USA member Xander Schauffele finishing T3, and moving to 6^th and 12th, respectively, while Taylor Montgomery jumped from 62^nd to 31st on the heels of a solo 5^th finish.

U.S. Team Captain Zach Johnson first announced the 2023 qualifying structure last year. Points in 2023 are awarded as follows:

- 1 point per $1,000 earned at regular PGA Tour events beginning January 1, including the Zurich Classic and WGC events, through the BMW Championship (August 20)

- 2 points per $1,000 earned for winner of the Masters, PGA Championship, U.S. Open and The Open

- 1.5 points per $1,000 earned for all others that make the cut at the Masters, PGA Championship, U.S. Open and The Open

- No points available at PGA Tour opposite-field events

Points qualification will conclude immediately after the second FedEx Cup Play-Off event (BMW Championship) on August 20, 2023, with the top six eligible players on the points list securing spots on the U.S. Team.

The six remaining slots on the U.S. Team will be Captain’s Selections and will be announced by Johnson following the 2023 Tour Championship.
