Edina, MINN. – The 10th Junior Ryder Cup between the United States and Europe got off to an stirring start, as the top boys and girls from both sides of the Atlantic were celebrated during the Opening Ceremony at Interlachen Country Club.

A bagpiper led both teams through a crowded terrace and down to the 1st Tee to an inspiring round of applause.

Master of Ceremonies NBC/Golf Channel Analyst Mark Rolfing, welcomed the teams to America and one of the most historic clubs in golf, Interlachen Country Club, which hosted the third leg of Bobby Jones’ epic Grand Slam in 1930.

“These matches reflect the same elements of honor and sportsmanship among competitors that have been the building blocks of the Ryder Cup for nearly 90 years,” said Rolfing.

United States Captain Jim Remy introduced his team to the crowd, and spoke to the talent on both sides.

“I look upon the United States Junior Ryder Cup Team with great pride,” said Remy, who served as the 36thPresident of the PGA of America from 2008-’10. “This team has come together through national invitational tournaments, the Junior PGA Championship and other top competitions throughout America. I know the potential this group holds. And we’re very excited to compete against the finest young players from Europe. These are the future Tour players; the future best players in the world.”

“To be part of such an experience is a fantastic opportunity as a Captain, but above all, for the players,” said Alsuguren, who was one of the greatest amateur players in French golf history. “I know all the players are determined to give one hundred and fifty percent,  and show you some great golf.”

The teams were also addressed by dignitaries representing both the PGA of America and Ryder Cup Europe.

“The players you see here have been taught by PGA Professional teachers from around the world,” said PGA President Derek Sprague. “Hats off to the players of both teams.”

Junior Ryder Cup news and notes

The U.S. is attempting to win the Junior Ryder Cup for the fifth consecutive time. Since 1999, the U.S. holds a 5-3-1 edge. Noah Goodwin and Lucy Li are both ranked No. 1 respectively by Golfweek/Sagarin. Li was also the youngest qualifier ever for the U.S. Women’s Open two years ago at age 11.

Looking at the rankings, the U.S. Team is also quite strong across the board. In fact, nine of the 12 juniors on the team were ranked among either the Top 10 boys or Top 10 girls by Golfweek/Sagarin—including Junior PGA Champions Norman Xiong, 17; and Lucy Li, 13, both from California.

A formidable European squad

Europe brings an outstanding international team across the Atlantic to compete at Interlachen Country Club. The 2016 European Junior Ryder Cup Team will represent eight countries—Austria, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Norway and Sweden—among its roster.

It will be quite a test for the U.S. Junior Ryder Cup Team, as leading the European Team are 15-year-old Julia Engström, the youngest player to win the Ladies’ British Open Amateur Championship; and Falko Hanisch, the winner of the 90th Boys Amateur Championship at Muirfield in Scotland, earlier this year.

Background

This year marks the 10th official Junior Ryder Cup, a tradition that was inspired by an exhibition in 1995, between the Central New York PGA Section and Europe’s finest junior players, a group that featured a young Spaniard named Sergio Garcia. The Junior Ryder Cup has been the platform from which successful professional careers have been launched for several players including: Jordan Spieth, Rory McIlroy, Hunter Mahan, Nicolas Colsaerts, Tony Finau, Lexi Thompson, Suzann Pettersen and Garcia.

Friendship match

Participants in the 2016 Junior Ryder Cup will also play a nine-hole, “Friendship Match” on Wednesday, Sept. 28, at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minnesota, and be announced live during the 41st Ryder Cup Opening Ceremony to a global audience on Thursday afternoon, Sept. 29.

Public parking

Complimentary parking is available at nearby Braemar Ice Arena, located at 7501 Ikola Way in Edina. The location is just off the Valley View Road Exit of Highway 169.  There will be no public parking onsite at Interlachen.  Representatives from Edina Give and Go - a local Edina based charity that brings life and learning opportunities to Edina Public Schools' students who are economically disadvantaged—will be stationed at the lot to direct people to and from the shuttle buses. The public is encouraged to make a donation to Edina Give and Go.
