MacIntyre Moves into Automatic Ryder Cup Qualification Places After U.S. Open Runner-Up Finish

By Josh Carr On June 16, 2025 11:12 UTC

Robert MacIntyre climbed seven places into fourth position in the 2025 European Ryder Cup Rankings after a second place finish at the U.S. Open.

The runner-up finish at the third Major of the year sees the 2023 Ryder Cup winner leapfrog several of his Rome teammates and into the automatic qualification places on 1,176.23 points.

The impressive result at Oakmont Country Club puts the Scot well in the race to qualify for European Captain Luke Donald’s 2025 team and claim a first away appearance for Team Europe when they head to Bethpage in September.

MacIntyre began the day seven strokes off the lead but would go on to shoot an incredible two-under-par (68) round to set the target in the clubhouse at one-over-par with only a handful of groups remaining on the course.

However, J.J. Spaun would go on to hole a 65-foot birdie putt on 18 to win his first Major in style – which didn’t go unnoticed by MacIntyre who simply reacted by clapping repeatedly and saying “wow”.

When MacIntyre made bogey at two of his first three holes, it looked unlikely that the 28-year-old would feature at the top of the leaderboard.

However, an eagle at four and a birdie at nine, added to a bogey at the sixth hole, saw MacIntyre hit the turn at level par before a 90-minute weather delay hit.

A delay which would ultimately rejuvenate MacIntyre as he didn’t drop a shot in his final nine holes, adding birdies at holes 14 and 17 to set the target in the clubhouse at one-over-par.

MacIntyre said: "Obviously I didn't get off to the best of starts. I was two over through three and then holed a lovely putt on the fourth, par five for eagle.

"That kind of settled me down. That got me into somewhat of a groove and back in the golf tournament.

"Then the back nine was just all about fighting. Obviously, the rain delay. My previous rain delay comebacks haven't been strong.

"Today was a day that I said to myself, 'Why not? Why can't it be me today' when I was going round, and I just trusted myself, trusted my caddie Mike, trusted all the work that I've done."

Fellow 2023 Ryder Cup teammate Viktor Hovland would finish one stroke behind MacIntyre in third place after being in contention for much of the day.

This result sees the two-time Team Europe man climb three places into tenth in the European Ryder Cup Rankings with 882.31 points.

The Norwegian is chasing down a third consecutive appearance for Team Europe.

Tyrrell Hatton, who was also in contention for much of the day, would finish one stroke further back in a tie for fourth place.

This result sees Hatton climb three places into second position on 1,216.55 points, as he goes after a fourth consecutive appearance for Team Europe.

As it stands, Rory McIlroy leads the way in qualification on 3,040.95 points, with Hatton (1,216.55 points), Shane Lowry (1,186.51 points), MacIntyre (1,176.23 points), Sepp Straka (1,130.73 points) and Rasmus Højgaard (1,072.33 points) rounding out the six automatic qualifiers.

The qualification process will end at the DP World Tour’s Betfred British Masters hosted by Sir Nick Faldo, which concludes on Sunday August 24, 2025.
