The last player to automatically qualify for Thomas Bjørn’s European side, Thorbjørn Olesen will become the third Dane to compete in The Ryder Cup – after Captain Bjørn and Søren Hansen – when he makes his debut in the event in Paris later this month.

It is safe to say the man known as ‘Thunder Bear’ has been one of the continent’s form players in recent months, and since his Italian Open victory in June the 28 year old has risen 35 places in the Official World Golf Ranking after a succession of strong showings.

Olesen’s Italian Open triumph – which came following rounds of 65-68-65-64 – would be the start of a sizzling summer, during which he came close to a second European Tour title, firing a closing 11 under par 61 at the BMW International Open before finishing runner-up.

A top ten finish at the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open was followed by a share of 12th in The 147th Open Championship, and after impressing at Carnoustie, Olesen also shone at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational.

Another fine last round, this time a six under par 64 catapulted Olesen up the leaderboard in Akron to a share of third place.

Olesen returned to Europe knowing he had work to do to secure the final qualifying spot, and after finishing in fourth place in the Nordea Masters, he returned to his homeland in pole position for the final spot.

With Englishmen Matt Fitzpatrick and Eddie Pepperell unable to win the event, Olesen found out he had made the team in front of his home fans and in the company of his good friend, the Captain Bjørn – a special moment indeed.
