Webb Simpson soars to No. 9 in Ryder Cup USA standings with Players win
Webb Simpson -- a member of Ryder Cup USA in 2012 and 2014 -- made a massive stride toward his bid for a third Ryder Cup appearance with his win on Sunday at TPC Sawgrass in the Players Championship.
Simpson began Players Championship week at No. 23 in the standings and jumped all the way up to No. 9 with his first victory in four years.
He was the only hopeful to move inside the top 10 this week.
Tiger Woods, meanwhile, climbed three spot from No. 34 to No. 31 with his T11 at the Players. Woods was outstanding in the third round, soaring onto the first page of the leaderboard with a 7-under 65 after making the cut on the number.
On Sunday, the two-time Players Champion looked poised for a top-3 finish. He was 6 under for the day through 12 holes and in second place at 14 under. However, Woods struggled down the stretch. He bogeyed the 14th, parred the par-5 16th and then took a double-bogey on the par-3 17th. After a par on 18, he signed for a 3-under 69 to finish at 11 under.
The top 6 in the latest Ryder Cup USA standings remained the same with Masters champ Patrick Reed leading the way. Newly minted world No. 1 Justin Thomas is No.2, followed by Dustin Johnson at No. 3, Jordan Spieth at No. 4, Bubba Watson at No. 5 and Rickie Fowler at No. 6.
The only other significant mover at the Players was 2016-17 PGA Tour Rookie of the Year Xander Shauffele. He tied for second at the Players and moved from No. 32 to No. 14.
U.S. players will continue to gain points in 2018 at every non-opposite PGA Tour event, WGC and major through the 100th PGA Championship at Bellerive, concluding on August 12, 2018.
At that time, Captain Jim Furyk will have his first eight players -- automatic qualifiers.
The four remaining slots on the U.S. Team will be Captain's Selections. Three selections will be announced by Captain Jim Furyk following the Dell Technologies Championship scheduled to be completed on Sept. 3, 2018, and the final selection will be announced after the BMW Championship, which is slated to be completed on Sept. 9, 2018.
