Tyrrell triumphs under the lights

By Josh Carr On November 11, 2019 8:09 UTC

Tyrrell Hatton won his fourth European Tour title after he came through a six-man play-off, played under floodlights, at the fourth extra hole, at the Turkish Airlines Open – a Rolex Series Event.

The Englishman showed grit and determination to keep his dream alive at the first extra hole, with a gutsy chip from the fringe.

But it was under the lights, long after the sun had set in Turkey, that the 28-year-old sealed his fourth European Tour title, as Austrian Matthias Schwab missed a short putt to keep his play-off hopes alive.

The win moves Hatton, who will be looking to play in his second consecutive Ryder Cup after his debut in 2018, up to second place on the Ryder Cup Points List with 1,786.14 points,

Victor Perez, who was also part of the thrilling play-off in Turkey, currently tops qualifying on the Ryder Cup Points List with 1,899.84 points. Rory McIlroy (1,698.44) and Danny Willett (1,373.39) round up the further two spots available.

Schwab, who almost went wire-to-wire in Turkey, jumps into the automatic spots on the World Points List with 43.24 points.

Jon Rahm (62.40), Bernd Wiesberger (50.43), Matthew Fitzpatrick (41.24) and Paul Waring (36.26) would also qualify for Team Europe via the World Points List should there be no change.

Next week, the players head to South Africa for the Nedbank Golf Challenge hosted by Gary Player, another Rolex Series Event on the European Tour.
