Whistling Straits
Whistling Straits was named by Herbert V. Kohler, Jr., Executive Chairman of Kohler Co., who was inspired while walking the land during early construction of the golf course. As he tells the story, the name came to mind quite naturally as it was a particularly blustery day, a north-to-south gale was whistling along the bluffs, and white caps were breaking on the rocky shoreline -- the straits -- of Lake Michigan. Pete Dye designed both courses at Whistling Straits.

Opened for play in 1936, Bethpage Black was designed by legendary architect A.W. Tillinghast, who was a guest at an exploratory meeting of The PGA of America in January, 1916. After The PGA’s founding on April 10, 1916, Tillinghast would later serve as a forerunner to today’s “growth of the game” consultants. Rees Jones led the renovation of the Black Course in 1997-98.
