At 12.38pm today in Paris, Team Europe were three points to zero down in the Ryder Cup and facing a potential whitewash in the opening session.

Tommy Fleetwood and Francesco Molinari combined to ensure the home team escaped the Friday fourballs with one point but the early momentum was certainly in favour of the visitors.

What happened next turned out to be historic.

Team Europe won all four of the afternoon foursome matches. Henrik Stenson and Justin Rose started the afternoon success with a 3&2 victory over Dustin Johnson and Rickie Fowler. Shortly after Rory McIlroy and Ian Poulter won 4&2 and were followed by an impressive 5&4 performance from Alex Noren and Sergio Garcia. By the time Fleetwood and Molinari earned their second point of the day, Team Europe had won all four points in the afternoon foursomes session.

The record books show that it’s the first time in 29 years Team Europe have won all four matches in a session, following in the footsteps of the 1989 squad at The Belfry, who swept the afternoon fourball session.

What makes the session even more impressive is the fact that none of the afternoon matches reached the 17th hole. It’s the first time in Ryder Cup history that either team has swept a session without having the play the penultimate hole
