Biggest Sports Comebacks to Happen in New York

By Ryder Cup Digital On September 28, 2025 14:30 UTC

The U.S. Ryder Cup side faces a large deficit in hopes of claiming the Ryder Cup, entering Sunday's Single Matches with Europe leading 11.5 to 4.5. If the US side is to make a comeback, it will rank as the greatest Ryder Cup comeback victory and among the great moments in New York sports history.

Here are some famous comebacks to happen within the state of New York (and one in New Jersey) that fans still reminisce about having witnessed live to this day.

In 2003, the New York Yankees faced the Boston Red Sox in Game 7 of the American League Championship Series. Trailing 5-2 in the 8th inning to Pedro Martinez and the Red Sox, the Yankees finally broke through with three runs and eventually won the game -- and the series -- on the famous walk-off home run from Aaron Boone.

In 2000, the New York Jets hosted the Miami Dolphins in an October regular-season matchup. In what became known as the ‘Monday Night Miracle,' the home team Jets scored 30 points in the fourth quarter to overcome a 23-point deficit and complete the greatest comeback victory in franchise history – a 40-37 win at Giants Stadium.

In 1992, the Buffalo Bills took on the Houston Oilers in the AFC Wild Card Game. Famously known as ‘The Comeback’, quarterback Frank Reich helped the Bills overcome a 35-3 deficit in the second half to defeat the Oilers 41-38 in overtime and advance to the Divisional Round.

In 1986, the New York Mets faced the Boston Red Sox in Game 6 of the World Series. Bill Buckner's infamous error allowed the Mets to make an unlikely comeback in the game and go on to win Game 7.

In 1975, the New York Islanders faced the Pittsburgh Penguins in the Stanley Cup Quarterfinals. The Islanders became just the second team at the time to successfully win a best-of-seven series after falling behind 3-0.

In 1970, the New York Knicks played the Los Angeles Lakers in Game 7 of the NBA Finals. Willis Reed heroically returned after missing Game 6 with a torn thigh muscle to inspire the Knicks to an NBA title in Game 7.
