Thomas Pieters has revealed that former Ryder Cup player and fellow countryman Nicolas Colsaerts has been offering him some guidance as he prepares to compete in his first edition of the biennial tournament at Hazeltine this month.

The Belgian was named alongside Martin Kaymer and Lee Westwood as one of Darren Clarke’s captain’s picks following his one-shot victory at the Made in Denmark.

When the Ryder Cup begins on September 30, Pieters will become just the second Belgian to play in the tournament after Colsaerts, who Pieters revealed has been quick to help him.

“I’ve been watching some YouTube videos of the Ryder Cup and Nicolas has been sending me some video,” said Pieters.

“He’s been really helpful and I think he’s more excited than I am. It’s really cool to have somebody like that by your side.”

Pieters, who was forced to withdraw from his title defence of the KLM Open after an allergic reaction to a bee sting on Monday, highlighted Colsaerts’ fourball win alongside Lee Westwood at Medinah in 2012 as one of his most vivid Ryder Cup memories from recent years.

Colsaerts, playing in his first Ryder Cup, played superbly as he and Westwood earned Europe’s only point in the afternoon fourballs as they defeated Tiger Woods and Steve Stricker on the 18th green after an inspired performance from the Belgian rookie which included eight birdies and an eagle.

“One of my recent memories of the Ryder Cup is watching from start to finish when Nicolas played and that brilliant round against Tiger,” said Pieters.

“I wanted to do it as well and four years later I’m playing the Ryder Cup, so it’s a little bit surreal, but it’s sinking in.”
