Golf Madness 2017: Strong Ryder Cup matches highlight second round

By Dan McDonald On March 18, 2017 6:02 UTC

It's been an exciting first two days of the NCAA Tournament, and the same goes for our Golf Madness competition.

Much like the tournament has played out, the chalk has held for most of the first round games, but we have seen a few upsets. No match in the first round was closer than the one between 4-seed Danny Willett and 13-seed Justin Leonard. In what would be a buzzer-beater highlight, Justin Leonard pulled out the win by 0.4% of votes. It's no easy task for Leonard in the second round, as he advances to play 11-time Ryder Cupper Phil Mickelson.

In the second round matchups, we have some powerhouse pairings that could be Final Four-type matches, and several that could be a preview of the 2018 Ryder Cup.

How about Alex Noren, who just missed out on an automatic spot on Ryder Cup Europe in 2016 taking on the Ryder Cup veteran Zach Johnson? Maybe a pairing in 2018 on Team Europe as Rory McIlroy and Matthew Fitzpatrick square off? And how about some love for the Ryder Cup veterans as 2018 US Captain Jim Furyk and five-time U.S. Ryder Cup player Fred Couples advanced easily into the second round.

Our pick for the most competitive match in the second round? 4-seed Justin Rose facing off against 5-seed Matt Kuchar

Once again, we now need your help to get us to the Sweet 16 and see which golfer will advance to the second weekend.

Voting will be open for this round until midnight on Sunday. We will then open the voting for the Sweet 16 round on Thursday morning for voting until midnight on Friday.

Our regional finals will be held next Saturday and Sunday and our champion will be crowned on Final Four weekend April 1-3.
