Rory McIlroy and Henrik Stenson believe Team Europe can evoke the spirit of Medinah and pull off another famous comeback victory at Hazeltine National Golf Club.
Coming into the Sunday singles Europe trail the hosts by three points, which is one less than Medinah, where José María Olazábal’s men trailed 10-6 heading into the singles.
Rory McIlroy, who has taken three points from his four matches so far this week, will lead Darren Clarke’s men off in a fascinating match up against the USA’s Patrick Reed at 11:04..
“There’s a lot of guys in that team room from players to captains and vice captains that were part of that Medinah comeback and once we got the draw last night we really liked the look of those first five or six matches,” he said.
“We’ll have to wait and see what happens, but in terms of match ups we had to front load and go with the guys that have played the best this week.
“I want to lead this team, I want to be the one who goes out there and leads by example by getting a blue point on the board. I fully accept that responsibility and want to do the best I can for the team.”
Stenson, who will also be up against one of Davis Love III’s biggest-name players in Jordan Spieth, echoed his teammate's sentiments.
“We have to go out there and take care of our own matches and play really solid golf and make this happen,” he said.
“We believe it’s possible and it’s just a matter of getting enough blue up there early and getting things done. Jordan is one of the best players out there so it will be tough but I’m focused.”
