Chris Wood is within touching distance of sealing a Ryder Cup debut at Hazeltine in the autumn following his scintillating win at last week’s BMW PGA Championship.
The Englishman, who triumphed by one shot in the Wentworth Club showpiece, moved from eighth to third place in the European Points List behind just Masters winner Danny Willett and World Number Three Rory McIlroy.
As things stand, the now three-time European Tour winning Bristolian is entrenched in the automatic qualification places for the biennial contest in Minnesota.
“This was a good one to win in a Ryder Cup year,” Wood reflected after claiming the €833,330 cheque for first place at Wentworth.
“That's obviously the biggest thing I'll take from the win - just giving myself a chance now. That's all I ever wanted this season was just to give myself a chance to try to qualify and this has done it.
All I ever wanted was to give myself a chance and this has done it.
“Obviously there are three or four months of golf left to play where other players can win other big events to knock me out, so I've got to keep pushing and keep pushing.
“We played the EurAsia Cup at the start of the year and Darren was captain there. The videos he played in our team room gave you goosebumps and things like that really work for me.
“So to have a chance to qualify would just be amazing. I need to sort of start getting my head around it!”
Thorbjørn Olesen was the man to slip out of the automatic qualification places after dropping to 11th in the World Points List.
Elsewhere, Wood’s compatriot and Augusta triumphant Willett further solidified his place at the head of the qualification race as a third place finish in Surrey earned the Sheffield native €313,000.
Willett now leads McIlroy at the top by more than €450,000.
