Following an enthralling week at the WGC-Dell Match Play, we look at what impact events at Austin Country Club have had on the race to make it into Darren Clarke’s European Ryder Cup team.
Rory McIlroy’s strong start to the season continued as he reached the semi-finals, but was edged out in a tight encounter with eventual winner Jason Day. The four-time Major Champion had made it 13 matches unbeaten in this tournament before his bogey-free face off against Day.
Danny Willett sits in second in the European Points List after he finished in a tie for second in his group with fellow European Tour member Jaco Van Zyl. Andy Sullivan and Matthew Fitzpatrick, who sit in third and fourth in the European Points List, both won matches in Texas, with Sullivan claiming two victories on his way to finishing second in his group.
Henrik Stenson wasn’t in action last week, but remains top of the World Points List, with three-time Ryder Cup player Justin Rose also remaining in the frame to make Clarke’s team after his performance in Austin. Rafa Cabrera-Bello has moved into the projected team thanks to his stunning display, winning his third place match against McIlroy after finishing top of his group.
Sergio Garcia and Thomas Pieters both claimed victories in their respective groups and currently fill the the final automatic qualifier spots.
