RYDER CUP STANDINGS THROUGH THE WGC-FEDEX ST. JUDE INVITATIONAL

By Ryder Cup On August 9, 2021 12:50 UTC

As it happens, it seems the fifth time's the charm for Abraham Ancer.

After four career second-place finishes, the Mexican standout finally earned his well-awaited first PGA TOUR title with a playoff victory at the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational.

It was a tumultuous finish in Memphis, with as many as five players holding a share of the lead coming down the stretch, including Aussie Cam Smith and 54-hole leader Harris English. But it was the trio of Ancer, Sam Burns and Hideki Matsuyama who punched tickets to the playoff, the 11th such continuation of play in the expanded 2020-2021 wrap-around season.

In the end though it was Ancer’s day to shine, coming back from four shots behind at the start of the round to earn the win.

For the U.S. contingent, the week begat an array of movement across the Top 20. Burns moved up two spots to 17th on the heels of his T2 finish, while English and Daniel Berger each moved up one position to 8th and 10th, respectively.

With the top six set to lock in just three weeks’ time, all eyes are on those automatic qualifying positions. Xander Schauffele, fresh off an Olympic gold medal performance in Tokyo, currently holds a tenuous grasp on the 6th spot, just 118 points ahead of Jordan Spieth in 7th place.
