Padraig Harrington today named Robert Karlsson as one of his vice captains ahead of The 2020 Ryder Cup.

The 50-year-old Swede continues his role as vice captain after assisting Thomas Bjorn at Le Golf National, in a week that saw Europe regain the Ryder Cup.

Rewind 13 years, and Karlsson was making his Ryder Cup debut at The K Club in Ireland, picking up one point for the team after halving both of his four ball matches alongside Paul Casey.

Two years later and Karlsson would once again feature and strike up a partnership with this year’s captain, Harrington.

The pair halved the opening rubber of The 2008 Ryder Cup against the American pairing of Phil Mickelson and Anthony Kim, before losing their second foursomes match against Jim Furyk and Kenny Perry.

The all Swede pairing of Karlsson and Stenson had a bit more success in their afternoon fourball match, picking up half a point for Team Europe against Mickelson and Hunter Mahan.

Karlsson would then see out his Ryder Cup career with an emphatic 5&3 victory over Justin Leonard.

It would be alongside Stenson that the 50-year-old would have his next taste of team success, this time at the World Cup representing Sweden in November 2008.

The 2018 Ryder Cup saw Karlsson become a vice captain for the first time under the wing of Thomas Bjorn and will be hoping to remain unbeaten as a vice captain come the end of Ryder Cup week in Whistling Straits.

Individually, Karlsson’s record on the European Tour is impressive, racking up 623 European Tour appearances, 11 wins and an Order of Merit title along the way.

The Order of Merit victory (now the Race to Dubai), came in 2008 making him the first Swede to become European Number One.

It was a season in which he won the Mercedes-Benz Championship and the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, seeing off tough competition from the then Open Champion Harrington, Lee Westwood and Miguel Ángel Jiménez.
