Europe complete fairytale of New York in dramatic fashion at Bethpage Black

By Ryder Cup Digital On September 28, 2025 21:57 UTC

Europe won the Ryder Cup away from home for the first time in 13 years after they survived a remarkable United States comeback on a dramatic Sunday in New York.

The visitors had started the day with an 11½-4½ lead at Bethpage but were made to battle on a nerve-shredding afternoon before Shane Lowry retained the trophy and Tyrrell Hatton sealed a 15-13 victory.

Needing ten points for the biggest comeback in Ryder Cup history, the U.S. won five of the top seven matches and with the contests down the order on a knife edge, so was the destination of the cup.

But Ludvig Åberg beat Patrick Cantlay 2&1 and Matt Fitzpatrick tied with Bryson DeChambeau to leave the stage clear for Lowry.

The Irishman had been two down with four to play against Russell Henley but a stunning approach to the 15th saw him go down the last knowing a win would retain the cup.

Henley found sand off the tee but hit a beautiful recovery to ten feet only to see Lowry get inside him on the same line.

The American left his effort short and Lowry holed from six feet before setting off dancing across the green before bursting into tears.

Hatton then hit a wonderful approach of his own into the last to tie with Collin Morikawa and seal a fifth European win on U.S. spoil since 1979.

Robert MacIntyre and Sam Burns shared a half in the anchor match but the rest of the matches all went the way of the United States as Cameron Young beat Justin Rose 1 UP, Justin Thomas, Scottie Scheffler and Ben Griffin beat Tommy Fleetwood, Rory McIlroy and Rasmus

Højgaard respectively by the same score, Xander Schauffele downed Jon Rahm 4&3 and J.J. Spaun defeated Sepp Straka 2&1.

The victory makes Luke Donald just the second European Captain after Tony Jacklin to win a Ryder Cup both home and away and makes it back-to-back wins after the 2023 victory at Marco Simone Golf & Country Club.

“It's been the most stressful 12 hours in my life,” said Donald. “Shout-out to the Americans, Keegan, his captaincy. I knew it would be tough. I didn't think they would be this tough on Sunday, they fought so hard, and all the respect to them.

“But this means a lot obviously to me and the team. We came here knowing that the task was very difficult. I couldn't be more proud of these guys and what they have gone through, how they have come together, how they are playing for history, how they are playing for the people that came before them, and now there will be talk for generations to come as someone going down in history. Couldn't be more proud.”

The day started with the news that Viktor Hovland would not be able to play due to a neck injury meaning the envelope rule would be invoked.

Harris English, against whom Hovland had been drawn to play in match 12, was the man in the U.S. envelope so his match with Hovland was declared a half and the singles began with the score at 12-5.

Bradley sent local hero Young out in the opening match and after he got a rapturous reception on the tee, he made a birdie despite a mediocre pitch and the United States had drawn first blood – a tiny step on a long journey but one that brought the first huge cheer of the day.

DeChambeau had spoken in the build up of the possibility of driving the first and he came the closest he had to doing it all week but it was Fitzpatrick who made a birdie to move up, while Rose won the third with a birdie to quickly wipe the early red off the board.

And the fast start the hosts were so desperately seeking soon belonged to the Europeans as Fleetwood won the second and fourth, DeChambeau three-putted the third and McIlroy made an 18-footer on the second.

A Young bogey then handed Rose the fifth and when Åberg birdied the second, Europe were up in the top five matches, with Fitzpatrick and Fleetwood up by two.

The crowd were subdued, Donald’s big guns were firing and just over an hour into the singles session, Europe were in dreamland.

Thomas then produced perhaps the shot of week when he holed out from the fairway at the sixth to trim Fleetwood’s lead and there was a red surge with Young and Scheffler getting back to tied and Schauffele quickly moving 2 UP on Rahm.

But Fitzpatrick birdied the fifth and sixth to move 4 UP and Straka and Lowry both won the first to prevent any early nerves kicking in for European fans.

Young and Griffin both moved up in their matches and Henley levelled with Lowry but Straka and Fleetwood stretched their leads to 2 UP at the third and seventh respectively.

Fitzpatrick briefly moved 5 UP at the seventh but DeChambeau won his first hole of the day on the next and the Americans kept fighting with Young and Griffin going 2 UP and Spaun trimming the gap against Straka.

The shift they needed was still not coming, however, with Rahm winning the fifth and sixth to get back to tied, Højgaard trimming Griffin’s lead, Hatton winning the first and Lowry moving back ahead.

Cantlay, Morikawa Thomas and Spaun then moved back to tied against Åberg, Hatton. Fleetwood and Straka respectively to leave it tied in seven matches.

Things can turn on a dime on Ryder Cup Sunday and as Young moved 3 UP in match one, Morikawa and Scheffler both also edged ahead and for what felt like the first time all week, there was more red than blue on the board.

And the surge continued with Thomas winning a third hole in a row to lead against Fleetwood, with nine of the 11 matches tied or 1 UP.

For the first time in the day, the visitors may have been feeling twitchy but McIlroy holed a long putt at the 11th, Højgaard moved level with Griffin and Åberg once again got his nose in front against Cantlay.

MacIntyre also went 1 UP against Burns but Griffin moved ahead once again and Scheffler and Henley levelled up their matches.

Meanwhile, in the top match, Rose played an incredible recovery from the side of a stand in the trees to six feet to win the 13th and then put his tee shot to 12 feet at the next to cut the deficit to one.

Fleetwood birdied the par-five 13th to get back level but Schauffele won the tenth, 11th and 12th and Spaun won the tenth to put two more flashes of red on the board.

Europe were still very much in pole position but the Americans had the momentum and with the tight nature of the matches, the great comeback was still a possibility.

The match between Åberg and Cantlay had been a relatively quiet affair but a bogey from the American on the 12th meant he trailed by two.

DeChambeau continued to cut Fitzpatrick’s lead with a birdie on the 14th as the U.S. momentum continued, with Burns getting back to tied with MacIntyre, although Hatton countered as he got back level with Morikawa.

The Rose fightback continued with a stunning approach at the 16th ensuring that match would go up the last but it was a sea of red elsewhere with a McIlroy bogey on the 14th moving Scheffler 1 UP and Spaun doubling his advantage against Straka.

If Rose’s fightback was good, DeChambeau’s was verging on the spectacular as he made a fourth birdie in a row the 15th to trail Fitzpatrick by one having been five down after seven.

All four of the bottom matches were tied but Morikawa won the 11th and there was every chance what looked like a forgone conclusion four hours earlier could come right down to the final matches.

That likelihood became more real as Young holed a 13-footer to birdie the last and win his match and the ecstatic reaction from the stand showed the greatest comeback was truly on.

The red kept coming as Schauffele went four up with four to play against Rahm and Henley edged ahead against Lowry but a Hatton birdie on the 12th got that match back to tied.

The pendulum in the top matches was now all moving with the U.S. as Fitzpatrick bogeyed the 17th to head up the last tied and Thomas birdied the last from 12 feet to put another point on the board.

Schauffele closed out his match with Rahm on the 15th to make it three quick points for the hosts while Henley moved 2 UP against Lowry, Spaun went 3 UP against Straka and Burns took the lead against MacIntyre to leave the contest on a knife edge.

Europe stopped the bleeding as Åberg closed out on the 17th and when Fitzpatrick and DeChambeau both parred the 18th for a tie, they needed half a point to retain but were not up in any of the remaining matches.

Scheffler finally got a win as he closed out a 1 UP win over McIlroy and the top four matches had all gone up the last in one of the most dramatic Ryder Cup Sundays in memory.

Bradley’s frontloading had seen his big guns play their part and while the U.S. dream was still alive, there was much work to do after Lowry hit that stunner into the 15th to cut Henley’s lead to one.

MacIntyre birdied the 13th to get back to tied and as Spaun closed out his win on the 17th, after starting the day looking at a potential record victory, Europe were now fighting for the half that would see them take the cup back across the Atlantic.

That looked less likely when Højgaard made a mess of the 15th to send Griffin 1 UP and Hatton missed a good chance win the same hole.

But the tension was finally released on a nerve-shredding afternoon as Lowry’s magic moment sealed the retention but the matches were not over.

MacIntyre three-putted the 15th to send Burns 1 UP and Griffin closed out Højgaard on the last before Hatton secured victory and MacIntyre won the last.
