Player Profile: Henrik Stenson

By Josh Carr On September 19, 2018 8:33 UTC

Major champion Henrik Stenson returns for his fifth appearance in The Ryder Cup, with Thomas Bjørn selecting the two-time Race to Dubai winner as one of his four Captain’s Picks.

The ice cool Swede’s Ryder Cup career got off to the perfect start at the K Club in 2006. He sunk the winning putt in a Sunday story that is sure to inspire the rookies amongst Team Europe, holing out to complete a 4&3 win over Vaughn Taylor to confirm an 18½ to 9½ victory, equalling Europe’s record winning margin.

Stenson went on to form a formidable partnership with fellow Major winner Justin Rose as Europe secured the last of three consecutive Ryder Cup wins in 2014. The pair were victorious in their three matches at Gleneagles, including a comprehensive 5&4 win over Bubba Watson and Webb Simpson in the Friday fourballs.

The Olympic silver medal winner has contributed eight points to the European cause over his four appearances, with his most recent a 3&2 win over Jordan Spieth in the Sunday Singles at Hazeltine two years ago.

In 2013 Stenson became the first player to win both the Race to Dubai and the US PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup in the same season.

He has won a total of 11 European Tour titles, with his greatest victory coming in The 2016 Open at Royal Troon, where he came out on top in a titanic battle with Phil Mickelson - a man he could face once more at Le Golf National - as he broke the record for the lowest score at any Major both in relation to par (20 under par) and aggregate shots (264).

Quote: "Obviously very excited to be part of 2018 Ryder Cup Team. Paris is going to be phenomenal and it's been a big goal of mine to be on that team, and when I didn't manage to qualify on the points, delighted to get the phone call from Thomas, and going to try my very best to prepare and come there ready to help the team."
