Player Profile: Ian Poulter
He has become known as “Mr Ryder Cup” for his formidable performances and obvious passion for golf’s greatest team event, and Ian Poulter is aiming to continue his enviable record as he makes his sixth appearance in The Ryder Cup.
The Englishman has played a key role in four wins from his five previous appearances, including the streak of three consecutive European victories in 2010, 2012 and 2014. He has won 12 of his 18 matches and remains undefeated in the singles.
The 42 year old will tee it up at Le Golf National as one of Thomas Bjørn’s Captain’s Picks, but he came close to sealing one of the eight automatic qualification spots, finishing ninth on the World Points List after recording nine top 20 finishes in 2018, including victory in the Houston Open on the US PGA Tour.
Poulter is something of a match play specialist, with the 2010 WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship and the 2011 Volvo World Match Play Championship amongst his 12 European Tour titles.
He has given European fans many memorable Ryder Cup moments over the years, including his performance in 2012 when he won all four of his matches as Europe produced a famous comeback in what is now known as the Miracle at Medinah.
In the Saturday afternoon four-ball matches at Medinah Country Club, Poulter and Rory McIlroy were two down with six to play before the Englishman produced a heroic finish with five consecutive birdies to earn the point that would give the team belief they could go on to retain the cup.
