Player Profiles: Tommy Fleetwood
It is never easy to follow up the season of your life, but Fleetwood has proven beyond doubt that his Race to Dubai win in 2017 was no flash in the pan and he is now a solid fixture amongst the world’s elite.
The Englishman began the 2018 campaign by successfully defending the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship presented by EGA title which set his 2017 season off to such a flier, and another incredibly consistent campaign almost reached its zenith with a Major Championship triumph - only to be beaten to the U.S. Open title by Brooks Koepka.
Fleetwood was one missed birdie putt away from a record-breaking 62 in the final round at Shinnecock Hills but came up just one stroke short as the American claimed the trophy for a second successive year.
The popular 27 year old is sure to be a superb addition to the European team room in Paris, with an easy-going demeanour which belies his fierce competitive spirit.
In the EurAsia Cup in January, Fleetwood’s three points from three matches for Thomas Bjørn’s European team included successful partnerships with both Paul Casey and Henrik Stenson. The fact that Fleetwood won the Open de France at Le Golf National in 2017 only adds to the sense that this could be a huge Ryder Cup debut for the Southport player.
