Ryder Cup race update: After the DDF Irish Open

By Will Medlock On May 23, 2016 2:58 UTC

Rory McIlroy has gained ground on Danny Willett in the European Points List after his outstanding performance at the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open Hosted by the Rory Foundation, finishing birdie-par-eagle to claim a three shot win. The Northern Irishman remains in second place behind the 2016 Masters champion, but Willett will have the chance to add to his tally at the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth this week.

Matt Fitzpatrick and Andy Sullivan were both in action at The K Club last week and did enough to remain in the final two spots on the list that will guarantee a spot on Darren Clarke’s team in Hazeltine.

Five players will qualify through the World Points List, with Henrik Stenson and Justin Rose holding the first two spots in the list despite not playing at the weekend. Sergio Garcia strengthened his grip on a place in the team after his victory on the US PGA Tour, with fellow Spaniard Rafa Cabrera-Bello finishing in a share of eighth in Ireland to occupy the penultimate place.

Thorbjørn Olesen takes the final automatic spot in the provisional team, replacing his countryman Søren Kjeldsen, after securing a share of tenth in Ireland.
