Ryder Cup race update: After the WGC-Cadillac Championship
March 7, 2016 9:22 UTC
After a dramatic final day at the WGC-Cadillac Championship, we look at what impact events in Doral have had on the race to make it into Darren Clarke's European Ryder Cup team.
Rory McIlroy, who led heading into the final day of the year's first World Golf Championships event, eventually finished in a tie for third to conosolidate his place at the top of the European Points Listwith his third straight top ten on The European Tour.
"I need to just pick myself back up and get into contention again in Orlando in a couple weeks' time and let's see if I can get the win there." - Rory McIlroy
The highly-impressive Danny Willett, who last finished a European Tour event over par in July of last year, is second on the European list after finishing alongside McIlroy in a tie for third; whilst Andy Sullivan and Matt Fitzpatrick, who were both also in action in the US last week, occupy the final two qualifying spots.
Five players from the World Points List will also automatically qualify, providing they have not already done so through the European Points List.
Henrik Stenson is in the number one spot on the World Points List at the moment, with experienced Ryder Cup stars Justin Rose and Sergio Garcia also currently making it onto the plane for Hazeltine through their standing in this category.
Two would-be rookies in Thorbjørn Olesen and Chris Wood are in the final two spots on the World Points List.
So the automatic qualifiers for the European Ryder Cup team as things stand are: Rory McIlroy, Henrik Stenson, Justin Rose, Danny Willett, Sergio Garcia, Andy Sullivan, Matt Fitzpatrick, Chris Wood and Thorbjørn Olesen.
Keep up the good work boys.
