Tiger Woods incredible bunker shot at the 2002 PGA Championship

By Matt Craig On September 26, 2016 3:00 UTC

During the 2002 PGA Championship, the ninth hole played as the 18th. During the second round, eventual runner-up Tiger Woods found one of the fairway bunkers along the left side of the fairway.

With 167 yards remaining to a well elevated green, Woods faced a steep wall of trees that have since been removed. As only he could do, Tiger attempted a near-impossible shot over the trees with a 3 iron, miraculously lifting the ball above the trees and dropping it softly onto the green. All he could do was smile as he approached the green.

He went on to sink a long putt to complete one of the most impressive birdies of his storied career. Yet his bid for what would have been then his third PGA Championship victory was thwarted by Rich Beem's final round 68, edging him by a stroke.

This week the hole will play as the ninth, and the famous trees are no longer an obstacle. However, any competitor who finds the bunkers along the left will appreciate the difficulty of Wood's feat in 2002.
